At Avenue Animal Hospital, we offer in-house laboratory diagnostic testing. These tests are important to help us understand your pet’s health status. This allows us to evaluate sick animals quickly, so that appropriate treatment can be started immediately.
Chemistry Panels are used to evaluate organ function. CBC (complete blood counts) are used to evaluate the animal’s immune system, screen for anemia and platelet disorders. Blood work to evaluate thyroid function, adrenal gland function, pancreatic function and screen for infectious diseases like feline leukemia, FIV, canine parvo virus, giardia, tick-bourne diseases and heartworms. Additional testing offered includes urinalysis, cytology evaluation of skin and ears and evaluation for intestinal parasites. In addition to our on-site laboratory, we utilize IDEXX reference laboratory for advanced testing and evaluation of samples by a pathologist.
Annual screening for heartworms and intestinal parasites are performed for canine patients. Annual screening for feline leukemia, FIV and heartworms are recommended for all outdoor cats. Annual deworming is also recommended for outdoor cats as well. Laboratory testing can help catch many conditions early before they become serious illnesses, so be sure to ask your veterinarian about which tests your pet may need during your pet’s next wellness exam.
Wellness Panels are available as a discounted rate to establish a healthy “baseline” and screen pets for underlying health issues, often before they show signs of illness. This allows us to intervene early to prevent progression of disease. The Junior Wellness Panel includes a chemistry panel and complete blood count. This panel is recommended for pets under 6 years of age. The Senior Wellness Panel includes an advanced chemistry panel, complete blood count, thyroid evaluation and urinalysis. This panel is recommended for pets 6 years of age and older.
For all patients undergoing surgery or anesthesia, pre-surgical screening tests will be performed to ensure your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. This also allow us to determine if your pet is at risk of any complications during the procedure. This allows us to choose the best and safest anesthesia for each animal. By identifying problems early, we can avoid serious complications. These screening tests are performed for pets of all ages, including young and healthy pets.
